Three people have been killed and three others injured in a shooting incident at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford in northern Illinois.
Officers received a call at 6:55 p.m. Saturday, saying someone had opened fire inside the bowling alley. They arrived at the scene to find multiple victims and a person of interest who is now in custody.
"We have the scene secure and a person of interest in custody," Rockford Police Chief Dan OShea said.
"When officers arrived on scene, the shooter was still in the building. No officers fired their weapons that we know of at this point but the individual that we believe is responsible and the only individual we believe at this point to be involved, we have in custody."
OShea said the attack seems to have been random, although "at this point its all unknown."
It was not clear whether the people shot were employees or patrons, OShea said, noting there were teenagers among the victims.
"I do know there are two teenagers that have been shot but I dont know the ages."
He added the three injured victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The latest shooting is the 35th homicide in the city so far this year, making 2020 the deadliest year on record dating back to 1965. The next highest had been 31 recorded in 1996.
Following Saturdays shooting, Mayor Tom McNamara issued a statement, saying, "Im angered and saddened by the violence tonight at Don Carter Lanes. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost loved ones. Im also thinking of those who were injured and my hopes are with them for a quick and full recovery."
